"I have no destination…life is all in our journeys…"

Business development and management has been an integral part of my life since early childhood. My foundation in business dates back to my early years in Wisconsin. I was 11 when my parents bought and operated a food drive-in. I worked there every day all the way through high school. I experienced first hand the fundamental lessons in risk management, overhead expense, margin of error, and learned very soon that success is tied to hard work and common sense. My business mind developed at the same time I started receiving honors in oratory and singing…preparing me to for professional presentations before small and large audiences whether testifying in Court, teaching clients/students, or providing entertainment for groups and clubs.
"Knowledge is a terrible thing to waste..."
I attended college for a year, and I absorbed the experience like a sponge. I was unable to stay the full four years but each class, each interaction, each experience is still in use. There is so much information available in a year of college. I added the experience to my business foundation and amazed myself by starting a small business teaching knitting. No, I did not know how to do it at first, but I used every scrap of information from previous experiences and turned my classes into a business that lasted 17 years.
I even had my own radio show for a year which helped expand my knitting class business and provided a great opportunity to grow as a business woman and hone my public speaking skills. Business knowledge from childhood, one year of college, topped by 17 years as a business woman was the composit of Karen, and I use it all. Marketing is very much a part of any business. My experience during those years teaches that the best marketing skill is sincerity that comes from the solid foundation of belief in my business, and the constant development of underlying competence in whatever the endeavour may be. I will not let my students waste any knowledge or experience they possess... both are precious assets and far too valuable to just sit gathering dust on a mental shelf.
"Every experience counts..."
Motherhood, homemaking, and partnering with my husband in a business for 12 years is a part of my journey that taught me so much. I also continued to teach knitting while keeping the books for our family business, worked as a dietitian and was named outstanding young woman of America for my volunteer work. Yes, the volunteer experience is another source of information and knowledge that still serves me well today.
When my husband passed, I moved with my children to Texas. I decided to change course and attended and graduated from costemology school. It included a very intensive business course and gave me what I needed to own and operate my own facial salon. Once again, all business experience from that food drive-in way back in Wisconsin days served me well. I was not intimidated by the risky part of ordering expensive supplies and products. I knew how to manage the expenses, appointments, clients, and the ever present unexpected. I practiced what I learned so many years ago, and built a solid clientel through smart marketing. I also added the components of hard work and common sense focusing on meeting the needs of my customers with quality service. Regardless of the type of business, whether food or service at a drive-in restaurant or service in a facial salon, dissatisfied customers won't return. Use all the knowledge and experience you have and focus it like a lazer on your business.
"Handwriting Analysis; Getting to know my brain..."
My salon flourished and I decided to add another component to my business; Handwriting Analysis. I began to research and study and as my knowledge grew, I added the Certification in Document Examination. My public speaking and singing experiences from high school and throughout my business life were a solid foundation when preparing for my appearance in Court or Deposition or providing scientific examination of a questioned document. Here was another career where every experience counted.
My business was building, my salon was successful...and then it happened. I experienced a life changing surgery and stroke. My brain was now one with five minutes of immediate memory. I was unable to run my salon, lost my business, and nearly everything I had, but... I knew handwriting analysis. I wrote and concentrated on my handwriting every minute I could function. My brain was disconnected from the stroke and there was the evidence when I compared my pre stroke handwriting with post stroke handwriting. Saying the last sentence makes it sound so simple... I assure you it was not. It is easy to say but it took months to actually perform the grapho-therapy on my self.
The struggle to reconnect my brain, come back from the stroke, and deal with the devastating effects of the surgery is a daily exercise. Afer months of intense focus on my brain through handwriting examination, I put myself back together. I moved from Texas to Albuquerque, NM, where I put all my life's experiences, knowledge, skill, ability, (and don't forget hard work and common sense) into my current business.
At 65 I am disabled, but run a successful handwriting business. My business includes teaching and certifying students all over the United States in all aspects of handwriting analysis, document examination as well as grapho-therapy. I have an apprentice program for selected individuals and I also appear in Court on forgeries.
My volunteer work includes serving as President of the Coalition of Handwriting Analysts, International (CHAI), writing a weekly column on handwriting analysis, and teaching weekly classes for CHAI members on all aspects of handwriting analysis and documentation.
"Research, based on investigation, for the purpose of revising human knowledge on the science of handwriting analysis..."
My research in handwriting analysis is not based soley on the study and investigation I conducted on my own handwriting after stroke. A large part of my work for the past two and a half years is based on the intensive study of the handwriting of brain impaired patients of Dr. Sadwin, a Neuro-psychiatirst in New Jersey. The classes I teach are evidenced based and my daily research and investigation of issues surrounding handwriting analysis is for the purpose of revising human knowledge on the science of handwriing analysis.
My future plan? Whatever I decide to make it!
